Welcome to the March edition of the monthly Emerging Architects and Graduates Network newsletter.

'People meet in architecture' is the overarching theme of the 2010 Venice Biennale. The Australian Institute of Architects is seeking expressions of interest from people wishing to volunteer at the Australian Pavilion between 17 August and 28 November 2010. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to meet architects, artists and designers from the world over in a setting entirely devoted to architecture under the direction of Kazuyo Sejima(!). Expressions of interest for volunteers at the 2010 Venice Biennale close on Thursday 8 April and more information can be found on the Institute's national website. I urge you to consider applying.

Together with the State Chapters of the Australian Institute of Architects, the EmAGN representatives from each state will be helping to facilitate the inaugural Emerging Architect Prize. Some state based groups have already been working with their Chapters to award similar prizes at a state level to recognise outstanding achievement in architecture by emerging architects. EmAGN and the national team at the Institute have developed a version of the state based awards, and are now in the process of rolling it out. Your local EmAGN representative and Institute Chapter will be calling for state entries soon, and from a pool of state winners a National Emerging Architect Prize will be awarded. We are very excited about the recognition that this prize will give to emerging architects, as it will be the only prize aimed squarely at recognising those who are registered architects. Many thanks to Melissa Medcalf and Belinda McCubbin at National Office for all their hard work in preparing the documentation for distribution to the Chapters. Immediate past EmAGN Chair Dominic Pelle and past SA EmAGN representative Danielle O'Dea are to be congratulated for their dedication to this initiative as the initiators of the prize. The State Emerging Architect Prizes are planned to be awarded at your local Institute awards evening, and the National Emerging Architect Prize will be presented at the Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards in March 2011.

To be announced at the 2010 Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards on 18 March will be this years Gold Medal recipient. Last year Ken Maher's whirlwind tour of the nation included time spent with local EmAGN groups. EmAGN is looking forward to the 2010 announcement and each state will be planning a similar event as an opportunity to meet and talk with the 2010 Gold Medallist. The Gold Medal tour is proudly supported by the Institute's Principal Corporate Partner Bluscope Steel.

In February this year I was pleased to be part of the jury process for the 2010 Dulux Study Tour. This year the tour has been extended to include London, Paris and Barcelona. 5 winners will tour the architecture of these cities and have the opportunity to visit some of the most recognised architectural practices worldwide. Last year the group visited the office of Lord Foster, Zaha Hadid and Carmody Groake among many others. The field of entries this year was outstanding. I'm taking this opportunity to congratulate all of the entrants on their hard work and effort in preparing their submissions. The 5 winners will be announced next week in Brisbane, and we will announce the names of the successful applicants shortly. The Dulux Study Tour is by far the most unique prize that the Australian Institute of Architects offers. It differs considerably from most travelling scholarships as it establishes connections with globally renowned practices and fosters an ever growing community of prize winners who are a unique network of like minded professionals. EmAGN would like to thank Supporting Corporate Partners Dulux and Virgin Atlantic and Davis Langdon for their generous support of this initiative.

As a new member to the SONA national committee, I recently attended one of their regular teleconferences with the National President Sean McEntee. The relationship between EmAGN and SONA is a crucial one. We are working at a national level to establish more collaboration between local SONA and EmAGN representatives. This is critical to enable us to continue the support and networking opportunities to graduates as they leave SONA and join EmAGN. I'm very much looking forward to working with Sean and his team, and I'm confident our national meeting this April will provide tangible outcomes. Keep an eye out for the next SONA publication Terra#5, to be released in the coming months.

This March EmAGN is working through some exciting projects that will extend across all states and offer you unique opportunities in professional development and networking. We are close to rolling out a series of state banners for local EmAGN groups to use at their events, specifically branded with state group logos. I am following our chapter based Emerging Architects and Graduates Networks with keen interest as well, they continue to provide us with exciting opportunities through significant EmAGN events and initiatives.

Design Festival 10

Entries closed mid February for the inaugural Design Festival 2010. Emerging designers have embraced the competition with numerous entries and varied responses received. NAG and the Adelaide City Council will formally announce the winners on 12 March 2010. Watch the Adelaide city council website for announcements.

Design Festival will continue to focus on the transformation of public space and how form, scale and site contribute to this transformation.

In 2010, the competition prompted the design and creation of small-scale items that improve the streetscape - and in the meantime open the eyes of Rundle Street travellers to the change that is possible through the quality design of even everyday objects. Design Festival 2011 looks to build upon this year's response, continuing to promote South Australian designers.

The architecture school; built for a small, discerning and - ostensibly - formally literate audience, these buildings typify and codify contemporary architectural attitudes and practices. Simultaneously, they possess a didactic, or pedagogic aspect - outlining what architecture, in a grander sense, could or should be. They respond not only to the pragmatics of a design education but to wider philosophical and theoretical aspirations.

This month at Process we investigate the multivalent design approaches embodied in some of Melbourne's newest Architecture Schools.

Talk on a Practice 1- Cox Howlett Bailey Woodland
Cox Howlett Bailey Woodland was the host for the first Merge Talk On A Practice for 2010. On Thursday February 25, Directors Fred Chaney and Steve Woodland talked about the new office the practice is now enjoying, along with the 4 touchtone design philosophies for the office. These philosophies were related to their recent projects, which the audience was able to see from initial sketches through to the completed works. This gave emerging members of the architecture industry an insightful look into the practice.

Everyone enjoyed the evening with a few drinks, some nibblies and an engaging discussion after, that delved into Steve Woodland's role as Government Architect of WA, the role of clients in making successful architecture and the effect of the new studio on the way the practice operates.

From MERGE we would like to thank Cox Howlett Bailey Woodland for a successful evening!

Talk on a Practice 2- Kerry Hill Architects
The next Talk On A Practice is scheduled to be at Kerry Hill Architects in Fremantle. To pre-register your interest for this event please email merge@raia.com.au with the names and emails of the people you will be attending with.

Emerging Architect Prize

The Emerging Architect Prize has up until now been run by ACT, NT, SA and more recently QLD. In 2010 The Australian Institute of Architects will run this prize across all states and territories in Australia with state winners going through to be judged by a national jury. The person selected by the national jury as the winner of the National Emerging Architect Prize will be announced at the Australian Achievement in Architecture Awards in March 2011.

The Emerging Architect Prize has been developed to acknowledge an individual emerging architect's contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community involvement, which advances the professions role within the public arena.

The Institute's Supporting Corporate partner, Lockwood, is the proud sponsor of this National Prize and will award the National Emerging Architect Prize winner with a cash prize of $2000.

2010 Venice Architecture Biennale

If you are interested in assisting in Venice, now is your opportunity. The Australian Institute of Architects is seeking expressions of interest from people wishing to volunteer at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, at the Australian Pavilion for a period of time between 17 August and 28 November 2010.

The Institute will be selecting volunteers to assist in two week minimum blocks for the duration of the Biennale. All volunteers will receive accommodation and daily per-diems in Venice. All candidates will need to make their own way to Venice.

Detailed information about the volunteering role and requirements can be found here. Please send expressions of interest to nowandwhen@raia.com.au by Thursday 8 April 10am AEST.

'People meet in architecture' to be the over-arching theme of the 2010 Venice Biennale

The Directory of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition, Kazuyo Sejima, has titled the upcoming Biennale 'People meet in architecture'. "The idea is to help people to relate to architecture, help architecture relate to people and help people relate to themselves" explains Kazuyo Sejima.

She added that separate spaces would be allocated for each architect or theme, allowing participants to be their own curators. "In this way, contributors will design their own space and make presentations that consider the experience of the visitor both physically and conceptually. It will be a series of spaces rather than a series of objects," she said.

Also announced were two new projects for this year's event; Architecture Saturdays, and the greater involvement of the Universities.

As part of Architecture Saturdays, a series of conversations, performances and weekly discussions with international architects, critics and personalities will take place every Saturday for the duration of the exhibition. Meetings will be lead by Sejima, as well as every director of former editions of the Biennale - including Vittorio Gregotti, Paolo Poroghesi, Francesco Dal Co, Hans Hollein, Massimiliano Fuksas, Deyan Sudjic, Kurt W. Forster, Richard burdett, and Aaron Besky.

2010 National Architecture Conference - extra/ordinary
22-24 April 2010, Sydney

extra/ordinary will dwell on the culture of the extraordinarily ordinary. As an antidote to the incessant abstractions of globalisation, we will be gathering together those who have an enthusiasm for engaging with the contingency of the everyday: inventing new ways of operating; embracing collaborative approaches and initiating direct action on the ground. Producing outcomes that are innovative and utilitarian, provocative and pragmatic. Resolving ordinary problems in extraordinary ways.

International Speaker Series

Following the overwhelming success of recent National Architecture Conferences, and in particular the positive response to the international keynote speakers who appear at the events, the Australian Institute of Architects has developed an International Speaker Series. The Series will bring exceptional and inspiring architects from abroad to Australia for talks in some of our major cities.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Institute was advised by Richard Meier that he was required to undergo surgery on Wednesday 10 February. As such, he was not able to travel at the scheduled time of the International Speaker Series on 23 and 24 February 2010.

Richard is committed to presenting in Australia and is very excited about the large number of people already planning on attending his talks. The Institute have been able to organise revised dates for the talks, being the following:

Monday 7 June - Sydney, City Recital Hall Angel Place
Tuesday 8 June - Melbourne, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Anyone who has purchased tickets to these events will be contacted directly as soon as possible, and will be offered the choice to either hold on to their ticket or be issued a full refund if unable to attend the rescheduled event.

We would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and hope that you will be available for the talks in June.

Registrations are open. BOOK NOW

Or click here for more information on Richard Meier and to view images of his works.

Built Environment Meets Parliament

BEMP 2009 took place with the BEMP Summit on Wednesday 12 August and the Australia Award for Urban Design on Tuesday 11 August.

A feature of BEMP 2009 was the collective discussion about the key principles of urban planning frameworks outlined in the consultation draft "Principles for Planning Sustainable Communities" by The Allen Consulting Group.

The principles have been revised on feedback from the BEMP event and we'd now like your input.
To view the initial and revised principles and contribute to the ongoing discussion please visit bangthetable.com/BEMP
