Hello 2010 and welcome to the first Emerging Architects + Graduates Network (EmAGN) newsletter for the year! I wish to begin my first official message to congratulate Dominic Pelle for his successful tenure as the chair of EmAGN for the last 2 years. Dom has championed a number of relevant initiatives for our demographic during his role, and has represented a collective national voice that has for too long been unheard. I look forward to playing an active and positive role in my new position as Chair of EmAGN, as a representation of our place in the profession of architecture. I'm excited by the potential my new position creates, offering the opportunity to be part of the highly respected and dedicated Australian Institute of Architects. I will work with the state based EmAGN representatives to foster a collaborative group that looks critically at the issues that impact the early years of architectural practice. Together we will work towards bridging the gap between studying and practicing architecture.

The last year has tested the profession in ways many of us have not experienced before, or expected to endure. It was not acceptable in the 80's. The ethos of EmAGN, and premise by which it was established in 2006 was to 'create a design community for graduates and emerging architects to mutually support each other and to foster a culture of architecture'. As a supporting Australian Institute of Architects network, we will continue to operate by this guiding principle, and in doing so offer you the opportunity to have a voice in the future of the profession. Many of you have witnessed difficult times in the last year, and through your local state EmAGN representative we encourage you to voice your concerns as well as share your ideas and positive postulations on architecture.

EmAGN has 2010 well planned, with the continuation and development of existing national and chapter-based initiatives such as the monthly EmAGN Newsletter, the Emerging Architect Prize, the Gold Medallist EmAGN event, and the Dulux Study Tour. We are already working on some new and exciting initiatives that will continue to be developed and announced throughout the year.

Now in its third year in 2010, the Dulux Study Tour has become one of the most sought after prizes for young emerging architects and graduates. This whirlwind tour is set to be bigger and better this year, with the five winners visiting some of the world's most renowned architecture practices in London, Paris and Barcelona. Davis Langdon has now joined Dulux and Virgin Atlantic in supporting this amazing trip. EmAGN would like to thank Supporting Corporate Partners Dulux and Virgin Atlantic for their generous support of this initiative allowing a unique experience for graduates and emerging architects. We look forward to working with Davis Langdon as part of the Dulux Study Tour team, and congratulate them for the recent partnership with this initiative. Entries for the 2010 Dulux Study Tour close on 1 February. Visit www.dulux.com.au/studytour for more information about this exciting opportunity.

Of course it must be mentioned that I feel lucky to inherit a position within an already strong relationship between EmAGN, the Australian Institute of Architects and the Corporate Partners. I look forward to working with Dulux, Virgin Atlantic and Davis Langdon through their involvement in the successful Dulux Study Tour. I also hope to continue the positive relationship with Bluescope Steel through their involvement with the Gold Medallist EmAGN event. Kingspan has recently joined the Corporate Partner group, and I look forward to working with them as well. I would also like to thank Lockwood for supporting EmAGN as National Sponsors of the Emerging Architect Prize. The generous support of the Corporate Partners for EmAGN is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continuing the mutually supportive relationship in 2010.

In the near future I hope to meet the Australian Institute of Architects National Council members, National Executives and National Staff. Those that I have already had the pleasure to meet and work with have had nothing but encouragement and support for my new role.
EmAGN looks forward to continuing to represent and support the interests of Chapter based emerging architects and graduates groups, as well as providing the demographic with exciting opportunities through significant EmAGN initiatives. 2010 is proving to be a very exciting year for EmAGN and we look forward to your continued support and involvement throughout the next twelve months.

NAG have a bowl
SONA and NAG 2009 Christmas drinks were celebrated at the Adelaide Bowling Club where a casual evening of bowls quickly evolved into a competitive, beer driven, event. Congratulations to the 'winning' team, pictured left. Special thanks to Fielders for providing several pairs of signature volleys and to Dulux for enough jelly beans to keep us going.

Integrated Design Commission
The Australian Institute of Architects has hailed Premier Mike Rann's announcement of an Integrated Design Commission (IDC), and government architect for SA, as visionary. The premier remarked at the 2009 Proclamation Day ceremony that "The Integrated Design Commission will have an enabling and coordinating role, and will advise us on how we can better improve the quality of life of our cities and communities around the State through better design, and by fostering innovation". SA Chapter President, Timothy Horton said that "before today's announcement, SA had lagged behind other states for too long, and had failed to recognise the place for design thinking in policy. SA has been the only Australian state without a government architect to provide strategic advice to the government of the day, on the Built Environment"

YAT welcomes Anthony Balsamo as the new national chair and looks forward
to a bright future for EmAGN under his direction.

Summer in Tasmania is festival time!
Hobart is alive with summer festivals bringing the waterfront alive and continually breathing new life into the wonderful spaces we have, such as Princes Wharf Shed 1 (PW1).
For the TASTE festival from Dec 28 - Jan 3 the huge shed was full of gourmet food, wine, music and almost 300,000 patrons across the week.
MONA FOMA - Museum of Old and New Art Festival of Music and Art in its second year has brought an incredible array of artists and musicians to Tasmania from interstate and overseas and transformed many venues. PW1 had it's forecourt transformed with an instant lawn, lighting and bright pink bean bags and blue bean bags, while inside dramatic lighting reveals the intricate steel roof structure of the large open space (image courtesy Andy Heah).
The festival continued until Jan 24 - see monafoma.com.au for details.
Other folk and cultural festivals include Cygnet, Georgetown, Tasmanian Forest Festival and Nayri Niara Good Spirit Festival on Bruny Island to name a few.

Sullivans Cove Master Plan
The State Architect's office has published the draft Sullivans Cove Master Plan.
The plan is being exhibited for public comment until 12 March 2010 at Franklin Wharf and online at www.justice.tas.gov.au/statearchitect/sullivans_cove_masterplan.

'a weekend away' Tasmanian Architectural Narratives
'a weekend away' is a conversation that started some years ago and is a unique reflection of the Tasmanian condition. Being unashamedly regional in focus it provides a forum to raise issues and challenge convention across design fields, within and beyond the island state.

Bruny Island 2010 continues this architectural narrative. To be held at Murrayfield Station on Bruny Island, south of Hobart, the event is enriched by the history of the island and its littoral setting. As an architectural context it celebrates community and place, while acknowledging the continuity of change, within a characteristic Tasmanian landscape.
12,13 & 14 March on Bruny Island.

Process - Monday 1 February

Pitching Architecture:
Of course, we're not talking about the sale of buildings, or the pitch to the client. We're not talking about the promotion of the architectural project but of the architectural craft. How do you engage the public with the discipline - communicate the importance of good design to an indifferent polity? What avenues are open for education, for inculcation? This month at Process, openHAUS, Melbourne Open House, RRR's The Architects and the Boyd Foundation discuss the experiences and successes of projects that involve Pitching Architecture to the public.
