Welcome to the final edition of the EmAGN newsletter for 2009 marking yet another recent significant milestone in the successful establishment of EmAGN. The Institute's National Council officially endorsed EmAGN two years ago and since then EmAGN has enjoyed providing graduates and emerging architects with a number of new and exciting initiatives during this time. EmAGN have created unique opportunities while continuing to represent the interests of the EmAGN demographic, demonstrating the importance of EmAGN as a supporting network for all chapter-based graduates and emerging architects groups in Australia.

The first two years have proved to be a fantastic and extremely exciting time for EmAGN with significant and notable initiatives both on a national and chapter-based level. Initiatives, all exceptionally successful, over the past two years include the EmAGN Newsletter, the Dulux Study Tour, the Emerging Architect Prize, the Gold Medallist EmAGN event and the 2009 Architectural Photographic Diary among others. We look forward to continuing these existing initiatives and are in the process of establishing new exciting initiatives in 2010.

As my final introduction for the EmAGN newsletter as the Inaugural National Chair, I would like congratulate and welcome the incoming National Chair Anthony Balsamo. Anthony is the current South Australia EmAGN Representative and an Associate with Walter Brooke and Associates. Anthony was involved at an early stage with EmAGN during its development and will begin this role in January 2010. Many thanks to Anthony for all his hard work, efforts and valuable contribution to EmAGN as the South Australia EmAGN representative since early this year and I wish him all the best in his new and exciting role and look forward to continue to assist him and provide support as Immediate past Chair. EmAGN would like to officially welcome Mark Berlangieri as the new South Australia EmAGN representative and look forward to working with you from January 2010.

I have had the privilege of being involved with EmAGN since its inception in late 2006 and since then have seen the successful network evolve and grow from strength to strength. It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to represent the EmAGN demographic and the profession on a local, national and international level and look forward to seeing the successful development and growth of EmAGN in the future through additional exciting initiatives.

The success of EmAGN over the past two years is a result of much hard work, by many people who have been involved in the establishment of EmAGN and that have contributed in many ways. I would like to thank all staff at the Institute, in particular David Parken and Ross Clark for their support and significant involvement since inception of EmAGN. Thank you also to other Institute staff (both past and present) who have assisted EmAGN with various initiatives and activities. These include National Council members, in particular the National Presidents since 2006 Carey Lyon, Alec Tzannes, Howard Tanner and Melinda Dodson; Greg Hughes, Shahana McKenzie, Cheryl Collett, Belinda McCubbin, Claire Croxall, Melissa Medcalf, Carmen Wragg, Lucy Bourke, Amelia Bogatko, Paddy Peisley, Gill Robinson, Sophie Seck, John Oliver, Richard Barton, Trish Croaker, Kirsten Trengove, Lorena Di Zillo and the Chapter Managers. It has been a pleasure working with you all on a number of different initiatives.

Thank you to all current EmAGN Representatives Erin Hinton (ACT), Joe Snell (NSW), Edward Farinha (NT), Christina Cho (QLD), Anthony Balsamo (SA), Hugh Maguire (TAS), Jacqui Alexander (VIC) and Dean Adams (WA); and past EmAGN representatives Marcus Trimble (NSW), Andrew Schulze (NT), Y E Ng (QLD), Danielle O’Dea (SA), Peter Walker (TAS), Michael Roper (VIC) Paul Edwards (WA) and Todd Paterson (WA) for all your significant contribution to EmAGN. Thank you also to others involved prior to the official endorsement of EmAGN, including Katie Cornish (SA), Rachel Barnard (QLD) and Adam Haddow (NSW). A special mention and thank you must go to Nathan Judd (past ACT EmAGN representative). As initiators, Nathan and I have worked very closely on the EmAGN initiative and he has had significant involvement since 2006. Without the assistance of all involved, EmAGN would not be as successful it is today and it has been fantastic working with each of you in many ways to achieve what has proved to be a very successful initiative.

Thank you to all the Institute corporate partners for your support of EmAGN and our demographic over the past two years. Dulux with their involvement in the successful Dulux Study Tour (now in its third year) and the 2009 Architectural Photographic Diary, Virgin Atlantic also with their involvement in the successful Dulux Study Tour, Bluescope Steel for their involvement over the past two years with the Gold Medallist EmAGN event and more recently support from Kingspan. Davis Langdon has also joined Dulux and Virgin Atlantic as supporters of the Dulux Study Tour next year. Your support for EmAGN is greatly appreciated and we look forward to your continuing support in 2010 and beyond.

Thank you to all who have been involved in initiatives and activities throughout 2009 and supported EmAGN during its early development. We look forward to your continued support and involvement in 2010 with an even more exciting year planned ahead.

Wishing each of you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as well as a very well deserved break!

Despite my repeated attempts to wrestle IT off (I have been fighting the battle since mid-November when IT hit the retail stands), the Christmas/summer-holiday spirit has finally hit me... and not just a mere glance, but a glorious boundary landing some 15 rows back...

...And so, in the spirit of Christmas, faction would like to take this opportunity to take off our funny paper Christmas hats to all those who made, well... faction 2009 possible...

To our supporters and sponsors: The Institute, Geze, Project Coordination (Aust.) Pty Ltd, Rock Development Group, QOTE !, Riteway Curtains & Blinds, and all those who participated in all or any of our events - THANK YOU!

To our idols who so generously gave of their time and talent: Ken Maher, Jude Abell, Stephen Cameron and Clare Chippendale, Simon Kringas, Steve Cetrtek, Wes Perrott, Chris Idle and Carol Marra – THANK YOU!

To the faction committee members: Erin Hinton, Dominic Pelle, Nathan Judd, Vlasta Jeftic and Myles Hannah – THANK YOU [ME] TOO!

And to all the rest of you out there... MERRY CHRISTMAS! Have a safe and delightful break.

Peace.

Design Festival 2010
The New Architects and Graduates group and the City of Adelaide have formed a partnership through which they are rethinking the way public space is used in Adelaide. A key element of this partnership is a new design competition, Design Festival, which will display and promote Adelaide’s emerging design talent.
Design Festival will enable you to contribute to the quality of our city in a real and meaningful way. If you are a designer or artist with strong ideas about how South Australia’s capital city could improve its public spaces, this is your chance to make yourself heard!

We wish Dominic well in his future and warmly welcome Anthony Balsamo as the new Chair from January 2010.

Edible Architecture competition

Call for entries in the inaugural edible architecture competition to be judged at the Hobart Christmas Party of the Australian Institute of Architects Tas Chapter, on 17 December 2009.
At last a chance to blend architecture, add some creative juices and intimately experience materiality through taste. A team from your practice including architects, graduates and admin staff is invited to create a model or sculpture of either an iconic piece of architecture from around the world, or present one of your own building designs or details for the gastronomic delight of others.

The Launceston Chapter Christmas party was held on December 10 while Hobart will hold theirs on 17 December and will include an exhibition of some of the final year projects from the School of Architecture and design as part of the party.

Sullivans Cove Master Plan

The Sullivans Cove Master Plan is due to be released by the office of State Architect and presented in an exhibition prior to Christmas. Emerging architects and graduates are encouraged to make time to examine the Master Plan and provide feedback.

ONO Project

ONO (One night only) is a Hobart based collective focused on repurposing disused urban space for ground breaking art and sound events.

ONO PROJECT 2 was held on 26 November in partnership with MONA and Kickstart Arts Inc and featured LIGHTNING BOLD (USA) and twenty artists inhabited and re-activated an empty, derelict building in the Hobart CBD.

Details of the venue were only provided to people by email, SMS and facebook messages who registered interest in the week prior.

It's been an interesting year for Process. We've had impassioned debates about the relevance of beauty (with the odd football related heckle), discussions about the efficacy and the very rationale of the bushfire reconstruction, speculative forays into the future, an inside look at the 'BER' projects and processes and examinations of the interstices of film and architecture. It's been a fun ride, and it's with a mixture of regret and relief that we wrap it up for the year - ending, as always, with the annual Arch^Up debate:

Arch^Up 09

They called it Melbourne @ 5 million. Sounds innocent enough, but it's a thirty percent increase in population; most of whom seem destined to dwell in the ever increasing, newly released land around the city's periphery. Can we countenance such growth; is it sustainable, or even sane? Or is our pre-occupation with density an elitist imposition on families and communities drawn to the amenity and affordability of these wide and rolling ex-urban spaces?

Gold Medal Evening with Professor Ken Maher
This evening was designed to give MERGE members a unique opportunity to ask questions and seek answers from the 2009 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist, Professor Ken Maher, in a relaxed setting. This event was to be held on the evening of Thursday 19 November; however the event had to be cancelled due to Professor Maher's ill health. We wish Professor Maher a speedy recovery and hope to see him in Perth sometime in the near future.

The event will be back next year and we look forward to discussions with next year's Gold Medallist.

MERGE events article
MERGE members and young institute members can reflect on a big year of events and architectural discourse through the MERGE article in The Institute (WA Chapter) online publication "The Architect' which can be found at "http://www.architecture.com.au/wa'.

Curtin University & UWA End of Year Student Exhibitions
The Curtin University & UWA student exhibitions were held on Thursday 19 November and on the 16-24 of November respectively. Now that the hard work is over for the final year students,

MERGE looks forward to seeing the potential graduates at next year's MERGE functions. For those not quite there yet, MERGE will be running "preparing for job interview' seminars at each university next year. Be sure to see the MERGE monthly mailout next year for details.

MERGE committee 2009 & credits
I would like to thank the below MERGE committee members for their hard work over the last year, as without their tireless work ethic, we would not have been able to have as many successful events as we did. Thank you to:

Jackie Anderson
Geoff Chinnery
Dean Johns (SONA)
Dani Martin
Yen Nee Goh (Secretary)
Todd Paterson (Immediate Past Chair)
Blair Sandover (SONA)
Kylee Schoonens
