‘Discover Melbourne’ Contemporary Architecture Tours
Thursday 19 April To celebrate the 2007 Conference and Melbourne’s important recent Award winning architecture, RAIA Victoria is hosting three Contemporary Architecture Tours in and around the central City. All projects will be introduced by the Architect. Tour 1 - Major New Architecture along St Kilda Road - from 9.00am to 6.00pm Full day walking & tram tour including lunch - $110.00 (includes GST) The full day tour will start at Federation Square. Then on to the new park east of Fed Square, Birrarung Marr, by the City of Melbourne in association with Taylor Cullity Lethlean, Paul Thompson and Swaney Draper. Over St Kilda Road we visit the Victorian College of the Arts’ Centre for Ideas by Minifie Nixon and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art by Wood Marsh. Then we tram along to the Memorial Hall at Melbourne Grammar School by Peter Elliott and walk over the Domain to Lunch at Peter Elliott’s Observatory Gate Café. After Lunch, we wander over Birdwood Avenue to see the Shrine of Remembrance Undercroft Development by Ashton Raggatt McDougall and then back along St Kilda Road and Swanston Street to the splendidly refurbished Melbourne Central, also by Ashton Raggatt McDougall. Celebrating a splendid day at a cocktail hour in the Melbourne Room at Melbourne Town Hall hosted by Lord Mayor, Councillor John So. Tour 2 - New Sustainable Architecture - from 1.00pm to 6.00pm Half day walking & tram tour - $55.00 (includes GST) This half day tour takes in three remarkable examples of recent sustainable architecture. We start at 40 Albert Street, South Melbourne, a project by SJB architects, and then go to the SES Headquarters, in Southbank by H20 architects. These two projects were awarded the Victorian Sustainable Architecture Award in 2006 and 2005 respectively. The final visit is to the City of Melbourne’s revolutionary CH2 by Mick Pearce, the City of Melbourne and DesignInc. (You will have never seen anything like it!) Celebrating the sustainable architecture with drinks in the Melbourne Room at Melbourne Town Hall hosted by Lord Mayor, Councillor John So. We start at New Quay by Plus Architecture, then along to the NAB HQ, National@Docklands by Bligh Voller Nield. Next to NAB we see the new residential tower, Dock 5, by John Wardle Architects, then across the great new Docklands Park by Rush Wright Landscape Architects and over the famed Webb Bridge by DCM and Robert Owen, to Tower 5 by Wood Marsh. Then we tram up Collins street to the celebrate with drinks in the Melbourne Room at Melbourne Town Hall hosted by Lord Mayor, Councillor John So. ![]()
