STUDENTS FLOCK TO SUPATUTE
by Chief Cultural Correspondent Dr. S.Pin Thursday April 19, 2007 Melbourne, Australia – Hundreds of thousands of architecture students are today expected to descend upon Melbourne’s Exhibition Centre, in a stampede reminiscent of paparazzi mobbing a politician under suspicion of perjury. They are in town for Supatute, a one-off, one-day event at the RAIA National Conference. Most come in search of a memorable tutorial with a household Australian architectural name, or perhaps with one who is about to be. Others have been engaged by the promise of an intense, personal discussion, and still others by the opportunity to escape university. Each has brought projects with them, either current university schemes, or others of their own development. A distinguished set of tutors will be present throughout the day, each invited by nomination of the student body. A number have already made comment on the day. Mrs. Positive is quoted as saying: “It’s so great that these talented students get such an opportunity. This is the kind of event that could really open their eyes to the kind of education we used to get”. Others have taken a different tone. Mr. Grumpy, whilst glad to attend, was at pains to point out that he was “disappointed to hear that for something so fundamental as a valuable tutorial, these students have to make an extraordinary exception” and that it was “all the fault of the government and the politicians”. Many additional tutors have volunteered from amongst the body of general delegates to the conference. Ms. Helpful said that she was “so glad to be a part of this day. Normally I would love to tutor, but never have the time because work is so busy [...] I’ve always wanted to give back in some way, and this is perfect’. The crowd is set to storm through the doors of the exhibition centre at around 10am, AEST. Numbers are expected to swell throughout the day, as further volunteer tutors arrive. One student, identified by her name badge as Y.D.Eyed, is reported to have said upon arrival at Melbourne airport: “I wouldn’t normally get a tute like this, but to be able to have, like, five tutes in a day, is just great. I’m so glad I came” she said. (SONA, Australia) ![]()
