MARK DYTHAM’S ‘DESIGN LIFE’ - Japanese will, Anglo-Saxons won’t

As part of reflecting on how design or experiences of the physical environment might be valuable to Australians, let’s hear from a paradoxic bundle…an extravert Englishman who thrives in Japan by making elements of the environmental experience that are often not architecture. Looks wonderful, so what’s the story? Some big ones from the Crew will be prompted; are there cultural conditions in Japan that indicate Australia will just have to be patient for a couple more centuries for a ’tipping point’? Does practice outside of ‘Architecture’ signal its demise as a profession…should we just move quickly toward the industry of product enhancement? Is it all about events and not places after all?
