Sydney Architectural Tours

As part of the 2008 National Architecture Conference, RAIA NSW is hosting four architectural tours in and around Sydney. Please note: Architectural Tour registration will be taken separately from Conference registrations.

Tour 1: Walsh Bay Walking Tour

Meeting at 8.45am in the little park at Argyle Place on Millers Point (just the other side of the Argyle Cut).

The tour will take in a mix of old and new architecture including Scots Church redevelopement by Tonkin Zhulaikha Greer, Westpac Plaza by JPW, East Darling Harbour, Hickson Road Historic Buildings, The Bond by Lend Lease, Walsh Bay Redevelopment, Sydney Theatre by PTW, Wharves 4 & 5, The Bond, Sydney Theatre, Wharf 4 & 5, Sydney Dance Company by Vivian Fraser and Argyle Place.

Tour 2: ESD Tour

Meeting at 8.45am at the Darling Harbour bus stop, at the rear of the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Drive, Darling Harbour. Tone Wheeler one of Sydney’s leading environmental architects will be the guide for a tour of environmentally sustainable buildings in and around Sydney. It takes in both recent public and commercial projects that have been recognised for their green credentials and includes the;

  • Victoria Park development, a development by Landcom and Waltcorp, architecture by Turner + Associates and Nation Fender Katsalidis.
  • The Bond, headquarters of Lend Lease Corporation, the First five star rated commercial office space developed by Lend Lease for their own use; and
  • Green Square, Mondrian and Coda. Two projects in Green Square by Stanisic Associates, including walk-through and visit to maisonette and sky terrace apartments.

Tour 3: Macquarie Street Walking Tour

Peter John Cantrill walks us down Macquarie Street and gives us an insight into the quality of architecture in this unique precinct. Expect to see the history of Macquarie Street, its formation and a discussion of various buildings along it chiefly exterior only. Particular buildings that will be visited include: Hyde Park, Queens Square, The Mint Museum, Sydney Hospital, Martin Place, Mitchell Library, Deutche Bank building, Various residential and commercial buildings, Colonial secretary’s building, Former treasury

Tour 4: Sydney Opera House Tour

Meeting at 8.45am at the Stage Door underneath the main steps of the Opera House, Bennelong Point. 50 years ago a young Danish architect – dreaming of Bennelong Point designed a masterpiece, which pushed the boundaries of creativity and science, and put Sydney on the world map forever. An in-depth and comprehensive stroll through the amazing visionary world of Jørn Utzon, charting the triumphant, exhilarating then tragic course of the design and construction of the Sydney Opera House.

Emergency Architects International Inaugural Conference

Emergency Architects Australia is a non profit voluntary organization which assists with emergency relief & reconstruction programs in developing countries within the Asia Pacific region. EAA is part of an international network created by Architectes de l’Urgence, France. EAA forms partnerships with local practitioners, local governments and other NGO’s as well as with the recipient communities. Together we develop appropriate and sustainable strategies for each phase of disaster relief.
