As our name suggests, Big Ass Fans isn't your traditional business. While the quirky name understandably garners a lot of attention, it's serious work behind the scenes that drives our continued success in industrial, commercial and residential spaces. Our provocative moniker originated with the massive overhead fans we perfected to bring comfort and energy savings to similarly sized industrial buildings. Today Big Ass Fans is much more than industrial. Big Ass means quality, form and function to solve problems in the built environment.

So what the heck does that mean? It's having a veritable herd of engineers on staff and the world's only R&D facility (which is LEED® Gold, no less) dedicated to testing air movement on a grand scale. It's speaking to our customers directly to understand and solve their problems. But mostly it's an insatiable drive to improve, engineer, design, test, re-engineer, re-design and re-test until we get it just right. And then start over again. It's applying our Big Ass approach to other problems, and inventing or reinventing solutions. We don't do things half-ass. We go Big Ass. And that's precisely why there's No Equal™.

Light is vital. Light is poetic. Light provides atmosphere and orientation. People use light as a way of creating places to enjoy. Light is the fourth dimension of architecture.

ERCO specialises in architectural lighting. We see ourselves as selling light, not luminaires. This approach has been the trademark of our work for many years and results in designing lighting tools for the user that satisfy all the technical and economical requirements of lighting practice, while at the same time opening up the whole fascination and magic of that 'immaterial material' known as light.

We are proud to now offer two CPD Workshops.

1hr “Language of Light 1.0”  CPD Seminar (Theory) – 1 formal point
'Language of Light 1.0' is a one hour seminar covering the philosophies of Richard Kelly and their implications on the design process from a lighting perspective and discuss how they can be used as a simple communication tool between you and your clients. The workshop covers recent developments in technology but with a focus on providing a balance between efficiency and visual comfort.

3hr “Language of Light 3.0” CPD Workshop (Theory and Practical) – 3 formal points
We have updated the format of our 3hr workshop – so, while the focus is still on Richard Kelly’s principles, “Language of Light 3.0” extends from the 1hr version with the addition of practical examples. Even if you have attended a workshop previously, there will be new content to keep you engaged and learning. We mock up the lighting principles or ‘layers’ for visual impact and understanding in a set showroom environment and then follow by showing you practical examples of how these principles can be applied to typical project scenarios.

"East v West"   -   The Professions of Architecture and Design on the West and East Coasts of Today

Design discussion often throws the words ‘collaboration’ and ‘co-operation’ around a little too recklessly. In Western Australia, the word ‘competition’ should be added to the mix. The focus and hype around A+D in this country is undeniably skewed in favour of the East Coast. But what does the West do differently? What is the distinction between the two orientations toward design? What can we learn?

"Design Democracy: ! or ?"   -  Architecture and Design Stakeholder Engagement and Democracy in Practice

The way the public perceives design is often very different to how the industry perceives it. This comes as no shock whatsoever. With huge projects like the New Museum or the revamped Perth Stadium on the cards, the design discussion in WA is not in the studio: it’s on the street. What does designing for the public sphere actually mean? Is this the only public? Meanwhile, in Europe, there is heated debate on the designer-side too. With landmark legislation that attempts to finally do away with ‘the replica’, democracy in design has come full circle to include the producer-side as well. When we talk about democracy in design, just how far-reaching are the ramifications?

"West-Side Stor(e)y"   -   The Architectural Profession and the Heritage Industry

Looking backward, moving forward, Perth’s cityscape has a unique architectural identity. But, alongside massive redevelopments of some of the city’s old icons – The Treasury, Allendale Square, the Walsh Family Residence – we have to think about what architecture is worth protecting. How important is creating or maintaining an architectural identity? How much of a role should architects and designers have in the story of Perth’s identity?

"Go West!"  -  Architectural Identity and its Relationship to Tourism

With the increased investment in Western Australia’s cultural and civil infrastructure, we have to ask what our A+D community is doing that seems to be getting the world’s attention. Tourism on the West Coast is growing from strength to strength annually, and the unique skyline of Perth is luring visitors from all over the globe. What did A+D do that has helped make Perth an international destination? How have they done this? Or, simply, why?

Frequently asked questions – information for providers of CPD

1. What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Architects is any activity that enhances the professional knowledge and personal skills needed for the advancement of architecture, society and the environment.

Key requirements of CPD for Architects are that an activity:

  • relates to the practice of architecture but is not an activity undertaken in the normal course of practice
  • has stated learning outcomes/objectives, demonstrating that the primary purpose of the activity is educational
  • relates to at least one of the National Competency Standards for Architecture: Design, Documentation, Project Delivery, Practice Management

2. What are the competency standards?

The National Competency Standards in Architecture (NCSA) is a document published by The Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA) setting out the benchmark standards of competency for registration as an architect in Australia and New Zealand.

The NCSA can be found under publications at

3. Is CPD compulsory for architects?

CPD is compulsory in WA, NSW, Queensland and Tasmania. It is expected to soon become compulsory for architects in other states in Australia. CPD is also compulsory for A+ members of the Australian Institute of Architects. Architects are advised to do CPD to continually develop their professional skills and knowledge within the industry.

4. Should providers maintain records of attendance?

Architects are required to manage their own CPD records. The Institute provides a sample CPD record form for members, available for download. However, CPD providers must also maintain records of attendance for each CPD activity.

5. How long should a CPD provider maintain records?

Points are allocated on the basis of one (1) point for every hour of involvement for both formal and informal activities.

In some cases, limits have been applied to the number of points that can be allocated to a single activity. While these tend to apply to less structured-generally informal-activities such as reading or attending meetings, some formal CPD activities also have limits.
