IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS
‘Kokura Tower’ is a landmark tower in Kokura, Kyushu, consisting of 27 residential storeys and 1 commercial storey which provide 150 apartments, plus penthouse suites and ground level retail and restaurant space. Located in a prominent position facing Murasaki River with a view to Kokura Castle, the tower enjoys excellent 360 degree views to the ocean and surrounding mountains. The design concept is based on organic forms appropriate to this site. The tower’s white petal-like forms around a terracotta core suggest a flower blooming and floating above the river. important aspect was to activate the riverfront. ‘Kokura Tower’ provides a public space, which is also organic in shape, pattern and elements, to connect with the first retail level and harmonise with the overall shape of the tower. The petal-like form also maximises views to the surrounding landscape, with open glazed areas and gaps between the petal walls providing view opportunities and cross ventilation. ‘Kokura Tower’ has an external finish of self-cleaning tiles, which wash themselves with rainwater, to keep the exterior clean and reduce maintenance. Most of the apartments in this tranquil yet energised riverside setting were sold before the completion of the building.
