Smiths Lake House
by Sandberg Schoffel Architects

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

A contemporary weekender. The project provides flexible accommodation on a heavily wooded sloping site on the shores of Smiths Lake, on the central coast of New South Wales. The clients wished for a building creating a minimal sense of enclosure on the site, so that the weekend experience could be likened to luxury camping, an escape from Sydney both physically and experientially. It was important also to create a sense of privacy and belonging on the site. The design

is a simple arrangement of two pavilions sitting across the site. The upper pavilion, closer to the road, provides entry, sleeping & bathing and creates separation between the street and the lower part of the site. The second pavilion, located further down the site, contains indoor and outdoor living and cooking areas. The pavilions are linked by a covered external stair. The project was required to be economical to build, durable, low maintenance and elegant.
