Harbour House, Newcastle
by Bourne + Blue Architecture in assoc. with Stutchbury & Pape

IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

This house has been a labour of love, for all involved. Babies were born, friendships were formed and many people can claim to have had a hand in it’s creation. Tradesmen, Students, Labourers, Builder and Architects have all attended parties that the delighted Clients have thrown, bringing with them a strong sense of ownership. Harbour House began with the Anglican Church deciding to subdivide off the under-utilised front garden of the Bishop’s ridgetop residence

Bishopscourt. A condition of sale was that the trustees of the diocese must approve the design. In particular the view of the Hunter River from the Bishop’s study must be preserved. Accordingly the building is excavated into the hill, below the ridge. A level area is formed, protected from the sides and the rear, partly enclosed, partly open, free to the north. The building is simply masonry surround, glass roofed court and delicate timber box, all under a floating roof.
