IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS
St Kilda is best known for its earlier reputation of Melbourne's public pleasure ground with an extensive network of large scale amusement facilities (eg Luna Park) that can be characterised by their robust and adventurous construction. This project is in part inspired by their memory. The site is located as part of a new sub-division associated with the development of one of Melbourne's first innovative medium density high/medium rise apartment projects of the 1990's. The site is small 7.0m wide x 22.0m deep. Adjoining properties consist of 2 and 3 storey townhouses, all overlooked by

the 6 storey apartment building to the rear. The brief required accommodation for an established professional couple and a young adult son from an earlier marriage. Given the extent of overshadowing and limited available private open space, and the client requirement for a non-masonry construction, a detached, three storey bolted and welded steel frame structure evolved. With living areas located to the top floor, the house aims to create an environment attuned to the bayside maritime environment with hopefully a hint of the 'pleasure-dome' sensibility long associated with St Kilda.
