IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS
This is a project without a defined site boundary or solid ground beneath it. The client is an independent restauranteur, but the physical structures it now forms part of are public. It is physically small but the extent of its immediate context is large and situated in a very visible part of the public realm. The works involved refurbishment of John Truscott's original 'Treble Clef' restaurant (substantially altered in the early 1990s) together with the construction of a new addition opening onto Riverside Terrace. It forms part of the Victorian Arts Centre complex, designed by Roy Grounds and now a Conservation Precinct. The project interacts with both interior and exterior

environments, forming a link or reverberations between these strong but conceptually separate worlds. Architecturally, the project sets up a wide range of relationships with its immediate physical, social and historical situation. It makes a space of multiple orientations and focal points - internal and external, old and new. It works visually, bodily and through association. The client's brief was explicit in its need for the spatial environment to be able to simultaneously accommodate customers of varying age, dress, manner, size, finance, interests and time available. Their ambitions engaged fully with the civic nature of the site, and embraced an idea of difference.
