IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS

The existing Art Faculty has been extended to include a new cad room, dark room and VCE studio. Circulation space expands and contracts to create photography, installation, ceramics and painting galleries. The new work unfolds around a sculpture and ceramics courtyard which includes pottery wheels, kiln room and materials store. All teaching studios face onto this courtyard. The existing building - an award winning Jackson Walker design from
 
 

the 1970's provided the opportunity to explore in built form concepts of 'extension' using the building's 1970's language (diagonal boards, light weight construction etc) and the client's stated objective not to depart from this ethos, the new grows from the old - deliberately awkwardly at first, to become an ordered and temporal expression which exists both as part of the original building and also as a contemporary building in its own right.
