IN THE ARCHITECTS WORDS
This project celebrates architecture in a diverse urbanscape. It is a major reconfiguration of an Edwardian building already altered by additions of the 1950s and 60s. The site itself was created through the subdivision of a single existing building. The original building was eclectic and idiosyncratic. Rather than ‘iron out’ these features, the new works exploited them in order to produce a series of highly differentiated spaces. The remaining fabric - a central spine

and roof terrace above gardens - was radically altered so as to provide the basis for the subsequent addition of a living and kitchen area, new entry courtyard, tower, separate office, and bathrooms and bedrooms. The nature of the project enables an unusual degree of experimentation and improvisation. The resulting transformation aims to promote speculations on the building and its surroundings and to produce a distinctively urban domestic environment and workspaces.
