RAYMOND, Antonin & Noemi

Crafting a Modern World: the architecture & design of Antonin & Noemi Raymond Helfrich K. Whitaker W.
The first comprehensive book in English on Antonin and Noémi Raymond, the duo sometimes referred to as the duo that creatively transformed design from 1917 to 1966, they are best remembered for a series of finely detailed structures built in Japan during the 1930s. The Raymond’s had prolific careers that included designs for housing, factories, offices, churches, and schools as well as furniture, fabrics, and graphic design. With a combination of their modern European backgrounds, and heavily influenced by the traditional vernacular crafts discovered during their travels through Japan, this designing duo collaborated with some of the twentieth century's leading designers, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Isamu Noguchi, and Fernand Léger. REICHEN & ROBERT
Reichen & Robert
This French practice has developed a reputation and acclaim for a number of conversion, refurbishment and restoration projects that blend the old with the new, program on program, and contexts with relationships. Initially, it was the conversion of a number of 19th century iron and glass 'sheds', including the Grande Hall de La Villette that won their reputation. Recent examples of work also include the development of one of the sites for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, and the headquarters of Nestle France in a former chocolate factory. With projects realised in France, Greece, USA, Qatar and Australia (masterplanning in Sydney and the construction of an apartment building and hospital) Robert & Reichen certainly deserve their reputation. An excellent book for those looking for a range of projects where refurbishment and sensitive contexts feature widely. Birkhauser, Switzerland, 2003. PB 173pp $A 108.50

Gilbert Rohde: Modern Design for Modern Living Ross P
By tracing his career at the Herman Miller Furniture Company, where Rohde was a designer in the 1930s and 1940s, Phyllis Ross places his work in a broad cultural and economic context. The book shows how Rohde’s focus on comfort, informality, multi-functionality, and flexibility transposed European design antecedents into furnishings suitable for American lifestyles. A champion of modular components, he experimented with new industrial materials, including Plexiglas, and produced furniture with biomorphic forms. Not only did Rohde introduce modern designs, but he also devised a complete merchandising strategy for their promotion.

Liesbeth van der Pol
Liesbeth van der Pol designs buildings with strong characters, buildings "that are not ashamed of themselves," buildings intended to add something of themselves, something unique even, to the human environment in which they stand. Two essayist describe and analyze Van der Pol's work: cultural historian Eelco Beukers plumbs the deeper layers of her architecture, while architectural critic Geert Bekaert places her buildings in an architectural-historical context. Although Van der Pol's buildings are extremely varied, with few evident similarities between them, the two authors discover surprising constants in her oeuvre, ones that are less related to the buildings' outward appearance than to the architect's manner of seeing, her design approach, and her deep-rooted ideals regarding the relationship between people and the built environment. The Storm & The Fall Woods L.
By any measure, Lebbeus Woods is one of the most original architects working today. His body of theoretical work focuses on buildings of crisis, whether marred by major earthquakes, suffering the effects of economic embargo, or damaged by war. Since the destruction of the World Trade Center, his designs have taken on new meaning and significance. The book focuses on two recent Woods installations - one at the Houghton Gallery at New York's Cooper Union, the other at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris - that address the role of today's architecture.  Both pieces are explored in Woods's powerful sketches, renderings, models, & constructions, exposing the mutations that enable them to be. A postscript of his hopeful design for a new World Center relates even more of his ideas, & essays by Anthony Vidler & Paul Virilio offer insights into the significance of the work. Groundscrapers and Subscrapers of Hamzah & Yeang, Ivor Richards
Funky Graphics, realistic computer generated models and beautiful photographs guide the reader through the innovative and ingenious mind of Malaysian-born architect Ken Yeang. Illustrating such projects as the Malaysian Design Technology Centre, the book details an approach to architecture involving low to medium rise, ecologically responsible structures which challenge the futility and non-specificity of many existing urban architectural forms. Introducing new concepts and attitudes towards an integration of landscape, architecture and ecology, this book is invaluable for any architect, town planner and urban designer who is striving towards a new and responsible method of practise. Rethinking the Skyscraper The Complete Architecture of Ken Yeang Powell. R

Reinventing the Skyscraper Yeang, Ken While he's busy saving the world from self-destruction and teaching and leading new design methodologies, it's a wonder how Ken Yeang ever gets time to write his books. Always pushing the envelope and reinventing conventional building and construction, he is one of the few architect's who practise what they preach and is making a big difference not only to architecture, but within the global community also. Focussed on building ecologically and socially responsible vertical structures, Yeang explores the notion of inhabiting the sky and documents in technical detail how we might construct novel designs such as streets in the sky or mobile high rise towers. Managing to avoid speculative and ridiculous ideas, the book has a sense of pragmatism and realistic intents - both the work of Ken Yeang and this book (one of many) are a great inspiration and prove that anything is possible. Holocaust Memorial Berlin: Eisenman Architects  Eisenman, P. & Rauterberg, H.
Inescapably controversial, its very existence challenged by German intellectuals like Günter Grass, the Holocaust Memorial Berlin (or, as it’s formally known, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) is now finished, some 16 years after it was first proposed. Peter Eisenman’s design, which filled a four-football-field-size parcel of land in the middle of Berlin with more than 2,700 concrete slabs, or stellae, was itself hotly debated, with some complaining that its abstractness, Eisenman’s trademark, made it a monument that evoked no memories.
