NSS1: Fee Psychology & Negotiation: Feb-March 2012

Fee Psychology & Negotiation is a two part seminar presented by Ian Motley and Alexandra Howieson of Blue Turtle Management and Consulting (BTM+C).

Attendees will learn about the crucial role that negotiation plays in building a successful architectural practice. More specifically attendees will be able to:
1. Explain how changes in legislation have affected the way architects are legally allowed to agree fees.
2. Address seven of the most common negotiating tactics and tricks.
3. Understand and apply a winning negotiation strategy commonly referred to as ‘Principled Negotiation’

Attendees will also learn about Architectural Fee Psychology and the application to Architectural practice. Attendees will learn how to:
1. Structure fees that utilise the concept of ‘Mental Accounting’ to avoid fee erosion.
2. Invoice for additional fees without damaging the Client Architect relationship.
3. Recognise detrimental behaviour in their practice management strategies and, therefore, avoid financially damaging decisions.

Ian Motley
Ian is the founder of BTM+C and divides his time between London, Sydney and San Francisco. Ian has over 15 years’ experience in project management, working on residential, commercial and industrial construction projects. Ian is also an accomplished writer, publishing a series of e-books for Architects.
Alexandra Howieson
Alex currently divides her time between Sydney and San Francisco where she maintains involvement in the family firm (Ross Howieson Architects) and develops content for BTM+C – specialising in Design Fee Psychology. Alex provides BTM+C with an Australian Architectural perspective to ensure that advice and products are relevant and up-to-date with the current climate.
